Campsite notes - Summer 2016

Sunset Bay Oregon State Park campground
- very nice campground with private, hedged pads/RVsites, clean bathrooms, friendly camp hosts. Seems nice for families.
- next to popular picnic area at the bay, which is an easy walk from camp.
- access to Coast trail, with overlooks to spectacular bluffs and ocean views to rocky reefs with sea lions. Also accessible via car to overlooks along thie drive to Cape Arago. Gorgeous rugged coastline.
- nearest tiny town is Charleston. Coos Bay is not a particularly nice small city; depressed economy.
- Hide Tide cafe & restaurant in Charleston has delicious clam chowder; a take-out quart worked well for heating up at camp.

Bullards Beach Oregon State campground
- very nice campground with private, hedged pads, clean bathrooms, friendly camp hosts. Seems nice for families, fairly large.
- the beach is great in that it's very broad and long. Accessible by a nice sandy trail with boardwalks, another paved trail about 1.5 mi. Or by an adjacent parking lot to a more popular area near the lighthouse. All very enjoyable ways to get to this great beach.
- about 10 minutes from the park is Bandon, the nicest beach town on the So. OR coast, with a cute little touristy downtown with shops, cafes, and a farmers market on Saturday. Face Rock Creamery is great for cheese tasting, sandwiches, and ice cream.
- the beach at Bandon itself is spectacular with boulders on the beach. Walk out to them to see tide pools and marine life at low tide. Way cool.

Humbug Mount State Park
- campground is nice, but sites are not quite as private/screened as other OR state campgrounds we've seen.
- campground is right next to a narrow but nice, sandy beach flanked by cliffs.
- access trail to 5-mi RT hike to top of mountain through pine forest was enjoyable.
- near Port Orford, which is ok, not the best, not the worst.

Umpqua Lighthouse State Park
- small campground for RV sites. Nice facilities. But with mosquitos.
- Nice, pine forest setting next to a small inland lake that has a 1.5 mi trail around it.
- near Oregon Dunes State Park beach, which has was wide, broad, secluded beach- wonderful. The adjacent dunes allow ATVs, which are very loud but can't be heard on the beach.
- lighthouse and maritime museum were neat.
- near Reedsport and Gardiner, tiny, unmemorable towns

Tugman State Park
- didn't stay here but drove through and it appeared crowded, relatively unprivate and  with lots of ATV recreationalists

Cape Blanco State Park
- haven't stayed here yet but want to. Set on a peninsula. Wooded campground overlooking cliffs over ocean. Private sites. Historic lighthouse and sheep farming adjacent.

California State Parks
- note that few campgrounds appear to have full hook ups. E.g. Del Norte by Redwoods NP lacks water and electricity hook ups.
